Subject: Stand Alone VSO Request
Dear Andrea Ford,
The Alameda County Veterans Affairs Commission js petitioninq for a Stand Alone Veteran Service Office in Alameda County. According to the VA, between 18 to 22 veterans commit suicide per day nationwide. Accessibility to veterans' benefits would immediately save lives. Due to better access to healthcare and financial benefits, this request is in alignment with the ACGOV Vision 2026 goals of providing healthcare for all and eliminating homelessness, poverty, and hunger in Alameda County.
Historically, the current location of the VSO in the Eastmont Mall has been difficult to find, which has prevented veterans from being able to locate and have access to the benefits they're entitled to. In January, when they were flooded out of their space, they were forced to relocate to the open area on the mall's second floor (pictures), which violates multiple confidentiality and professional standards.
We're contacting you to have the city of Alameda Veteran Memorial Building considered as a temporary or permanent Veteran Service Offce site. The space is centrally located in downtown Alameda at 2203 Central Ave 94501. The space is available for immediate use once we know the level of services and needs that the VSO staff identifies. We'd also like you to consider the Oakland Veteran Memorial Building on 200 Grand Ave.
As a result of how the operations of the ALCO VSO are currently being run, if you compare our Cal Vet VSO annual statistics (page 16) with the other 57 counties within the state, we appear to be one of, if not the lowest-performing office statewide. Particularly when it comes to in-person visits. A Stand Alone VSO would provide seamless access, which would improve our performance.
Please respond via email prior to our June 17th meeting. You're also invited to join us at our June meeting, either virtually or in person. We look forward to hearing from you.
Very Respectfully,
Omar Farmer, Chairperson
